The Second Room will reflect the Soulful House and Jazzy Dance Vybe that is reflected in such gigs as Lytham Soulfuldance represented here by Pete Haigh Andy Lett ansd Steve Naylor with their unique music selections plus Soul Purposes very own Mark Randle who also has a monthly show on Starpoint Radio.
Tony Cooney is another of our residents in this Room a man who has almost single handedly ireinvented the Nu Jazz /Jazzy dancefloor experience as seen at Freestylin' & Fro-disia events his electricity and music when he is behind the decks is a well known phenomena in the north west.Tony also does a monthly Freestylin' Show on Starpoint Radio with Colin Curtis.

SEAN McCABE BIOGRAPHY
House music producer Sean McCabe may be a new name too many people. If you look around a little you will find that Sean, age of 23 from South Wales UK, has an amazing list of credits to his name.
Since the age of 13, Sean has had a huge passion for music production and DJ’ing. Being influenced by radio shows like Danny Rampling’s Love Groove Dance Party and Deli-G’s The Touch, his love for soulful dance music grew immensely, inspired by the music he was hearing at the time, along with a growing interest in production and writing music, it became apparent that this was the right direction to be heading in.
He has Produced and remixed artists such as Roland Clarke, SuSu Bobien, Todd Terry, Quentin Harris and Stephanie Cooke. Sean’s first releases dropped in 2003 working along side Southern Divide. This saw releases on Mountain Records, Device Records, Soulfuric Deep, and Fluential Records; soon after, he met Chicago’s Big Ed of the legendary Blak Beatniks and began collaborating on new original songs and projects; from this, the idea for Melodious Recordings was born in 2005. This new partnership saw releases such as Free to be Free on Tony Humphries label Tony Records, plus a handful of releases on Melodious Recordings.
Sean’s more recent work has found him recording for labels such as King Street Sounds, Soundmen On Wax, Tony Records and Superb Entertainment, remixing artists such as Dennis Ferrer, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Stephanie Cooke, KT Brooks, Terrance Parker, Barbara Tucker, SuSu Bobien, and Roland Clarke.
Although production is Sean’s main driving force, he has always had a love for DJ’ing; being influenced by DJ’s such as Deli-G, Tony Humphries, Karizma, Louie Vega etc, he tries to deliver a musically diverse set without loosing the entertainment factor of DJ’ing and educating the audience in old and new soulful dance music from across the board.

Tokyo Jazz Notes has from time to time posted features related to the jazz dance scene here in Japan, currently led by dance groups such as Stax Groove, Re:Poll FX, ADSL and Broken Sport, as well as the jazz dance events such as BeBop Square and Jazz For Dancers (coming up this weekend at JZ'Brat). It should be remembered that the current Japanese scene was born out of the UK jazz dance scene that dates back over the past couple of decades in a story well told by Snowboy in his book From Jazz Funk & Fusion To Acid Jazz: The History of the UK Jazz Dance Scene.

Back in the UK, some of the DJs from the original jazz dance scene are working hard to keep the sound alive and bring jazz dance firmly into the 21st century. Jazz fans in the north west of England will probably already be familiar with the Freestylin' event, and this slideshow features some shots from the events held over the last year or so. The latest album from Stefania Rava has caused quite a stir here in the UK with Colin Curtis and my good self. That is if two guys can cause a stir that is. Got to hear sound samples of the album tracks from a Japanese web site a few months back and I was impressed to say the least. Informed Mr. Curtis the same day and he too was suitably impressed to start looking to buy a copy. That proved a bit of a problem and a pain to be honest but more on that later. The quality of the production is outstanding the the track selection is excellent. There is something here for all Jazz heads. Marvelous uptempo Dance Jazz to sublime quality slow numbers to suit all tastes. Some classic tunes are presented to us with minimal but lively excellent acoustic accompaniment with Miss Rava`s elegant tones shining throughout. Personal favorites being Madeline Bell`s `That's What Friends Are For`, `Empty Faces` (vocal version of `Vera Cruz` evoking the classic by Mark Murphy), Joe Samples `Snowflake` and the truly dreamy excellent `Never Was Love`.Worth the price just for that one track alone in my humble opinion. Added are tunes by Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone and others and this is a must own Jazz album. Thats the problem guys.........the owning it bit, you see it`s only released in Japan thus far on the Pony Canyon label and it cost a few pennies and yen to get the damn thing over to good old `Blighty` (that's the UK if you don`t know). Produced by Italy`s Paolo Scotti`s of the De-Javu label and featuring Italian musicians including Anrea Pozza one would think a European release would have occurred................er nope not a smidgen of a drop of a whisker. Japan only and we don`t get it. Come on get this bloody thing released where people can get their hands on one of the best jazz albums of the year so far.Or dig deep and Google that thing in Japan. I believe you dear reader will want to own this,. We`ve got ours.

Hi all. It`s been a while as usual. Just a few things that are going on at the moment you may be interested in.
The next Freestylin`event is on Sunday the 27th of June at The Mark Addy in Manchester. This will be the 4th one and it gets better every time. Great reviews from all those attended thus far so why not check it out. Colin Curtis, Roger Williams and you’re truly providing you with the best in Soul & Jazz in a great venue right in the heart of Manchester. See Rogers great Blue Note style artwork flyer attached.

Colin has his own radio programme now which is currently on the internet radio station Starpoint. Although there are moves for it to be broadcast on Solar radio as well…….to be confirmed. The next Starpoint show will be on Saturday the 5th June at 2000 hrs (UK time). I have the pleasure of producing the programme and co-presenting. The previous is available for download here.

Alas no Hilton Birmingham Weekender this year for reasons unknown to me, so we will be attending the EMS Weekender (Essentialmodernsoul) in July. EMS is the internet site forum for all things Soul scene in the UK and beyond. To give you an idea of it`s pull all the weekender tickets were completely sold out without any advertisement beyond the forum it`self. They will need a bigger hotel next year.

Colin has been asked repeatedly over the years to produce a radio programme and as of Saturday the 8th of May you need wait no longer. The show is scheduled for 8pm UK time and repeated later in the week. Taking part this time around is yours truly.

I have played this game now for over 40 years it has become the soundtrack not just to my life but to thousands of others too.I have spent most of those years in the twilight hours in some fantastic atmospheric clubs from opulent to seedy with some incredible people who shared my passion for Soul Jazz House NuJazz Music.Over those years I have covered all genres of black music and continued to move forward as I have always found it impossible to stand still.From the heady days of The Golden Torch and Blackpool Mecca in the 60's and seventies,through Rafters Cassinellis Berlin in the 70's and 80'S to the Weekenders at Blackpool,Southport and New Soul & House nights in the nineties through to NuJazz and Soul of today.A time when I Dj'ed mainly in my own Bermuda Triangle of Manchester,Birmingham and Nottingham.I find that progress after the initial furore and impact of something new always leaves a positive addition to these musical genres.This for me has been the best ride and the best job that anyone could have.To be witness over the years to some of the best music of the US & UK presented by some superb innovation by passionate Dj's who share my ethos. On the Sunday morning most of the northern UK woke to a few inches of snow which caused us some concern as to the travel arrangements for people attending the event. By midday most of it had gone but we atticipated that many people would be travelling quite far and would still be affected. We knew from the original event that people were coming considerable distances from the Midlands, Yorkshire and Cumbria etc but as you will see from the photos the event was well attended as folks braved the elements and didn`t we have a good one.
Once again the blend of Soul grooves and Nujazz hit the spot with everyone up for dancing at what must now be one of the coolest venues. As the last afternoon diner in the Mark Addy was finishing we were clearing the dancefloor and setting up Baz`s amazing sound system and 20 mins later we were off with Colin easing us in with some choice jazz selections. The place filled up earlier than last time as Mark Grice took over and continued the jazz style groove. Enter Roger Williams and the place began to dance as some seriously nice soul filled the room. Nujazz time followed with yours truly and I must say that for me it is a pleasure to play to such an openminded and up for it group of people. Besides more regular tunes I enjoyed blowing the dust of Ronnie Jordan`s version of `So What` which was extremley well excepted. Colin & Roger took another turn playing so many tunes that there are to many to mention. The floor was busy all night and well, you`ve just gotta get there and experience it for yourself. Mark & I finnished off with a rather eclectic set and that was it another Freestylin night that seemed to shoot past all to quickly.
We did find out the next day that some people wouldn`t chance the weather but the good news is the next Freestylin is booked at the Mark Addy for Sunday the 2nd of May 2010 and with the warmer weather it is bound to be a packer. Come early....you have been warned.

After a packed out lock-out party in December we relaunch for the new decade, bringing back two of our favourite DJ’s from the last. Karizma and Atjazz are two of the most prolific DJ/Producers in the world today, and to have them playing together at Uber is simply huge! Birmingham favourite Karizma hasn’t played in the city for over a year, and after many requests to bring him back from you guys, we’ve finally done it. Having him alongside Atjazz, our favourite from 2009, is going to be special.

If this isnt enough to wet your appetite Soul Underground will be again hosting a second room. This month they bring Manchester`s Fro-Disia, a party by the legendary Colin Curtis & Tony Cooney. Unmissable!

For the first time in two years we head back to where it all began for us in Birmingham, at The Rainbow Warehouse. An underground space that’s perfect for our vibe, the fully heated Warehouse is situated 50 yards down the road from our usual home at The Rainbow Pub. See the map below if you’re in any doubt.

Recently returned from attendeding this, as always, superb weekender where we - Colin Curtis Mark Grice and I - had the pleasure of once again of proving the Jazz session on the Saturday afternoon. We followed Bob Jefferies great set and I think it`s fair to say we all had a great time. Met people from all over the UK who were well up for Jazzy grooves.On the soul side of things the icing on the cake this year was a unbelievable live stage performance from Chapter 8.

What a first night that was. The venue was spot on. Nice decor with the curved brick ceilings, friendly staff (they even danced everytime they crossed the floor and behind the bar for that matter), wonderful location with the lights bouncing off the river only feet away from the dance floor.Always like a venue where you go down a flight of stairs to get in. Peoples reactions as they came in was amazing as they saw the venue and heard Baz`s sound system.
The music went from soul to jazz to soul ...and the reaction was excellent. brand new Nujazz, Latin, contempary Soul spaced with some not to often heard music from the past. Old jazzers discovering the nu stuff and soulies groovin on the jazz.What a refreshing change.All this in Manchester city center and.......on a Sunday.

....OMG what a venue!!! It was wonderful to see everyones faces as they walked through the door and to all say the same thing 'wow' - pure quality. What a find.

It was a great first night, thought the mix of the music was spot on. Did at first only intend on staying till around 10.00 due to work and getting a lift home but party people that we are stayed till near the end. CLASS.

There was some fantastic foot movement going on, pleasure to watch and how about all those DJ's in attendance Mr 'taking care of business' himself and boy can he dance. He loved the Joe track as did all the dancefloor.

This night is a definite must, it's different from all other nights in Manchester. It's going to be HUGE. Be warned.

Other than I like this track I can`t say much as I can!t speak Japanese. Should learn really – how hard can it be for a lad from Lancashire ???

Well Mr Curtis and I have talked about getting a gig going in Manchester as the city hold a lot of history for Colin`s Dj`n. He is well know for many Soul, Jazz and House venues in the UK but especially in Manchester for his dance jazz sessions at the Berlin and Rafters. So I`m chuffed to announce he has organised this....

I really cant wait for this. 7 hours of open minded Jazz , Nujazz & Soul vibes from Colin Curtis, Roger Williams and yours truly. Coupled with Baz Maleedy`s fantastic`wall of sound` system and all for a fiver on the door it`s gonna be a cracker.

‘Out to Lunch’ celebrated its ninth anniversary earlier this year and it is still probably the best kept secret in the Midlands …. voted best jazz dance session in the world, by Straight No Chaser magazine ……. great venue, great crowd, brilliant dancers, great tunes!

Based at the Snug Lounge on Houndsgate in Nottingham city centre since December 2008, it’s business as usual. The flyer, which cleverly makes use of some iconic Blue Note artwork describes the session as ‘for dancers, eavesdroppers and non-conformists’. It is … Jazz Dance, Hard Bop, Afro Cuban and Latin sounds, predominantly at 100mph.

The session runs from 5.00pm ‘til 9.00pm and it’s £3.00 on the door. The session attracts some of the UK’s finest jazz dancers, like Perry and Rocky, who have a tune named in their honour, which reflects their status on the jazz-dance scene.

The Snug Lounge is a smallish cellar bar that attracts around 50 every month, with about 80% being spectators, because the dance floor is a spectacle. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming and a lot of that is down to the DJ/Promoter ‘Killer Jim’. Jim is one of the nicest fellas you’re likely to meet and proper knowledgeable when it comes to jazz tunes, he’s also very helpful, if like me you’re a vinyl buyer forever searching for those elusive tracks. For me the ‘Out at Lunch’ session is a ‘never miss’ because

a it’s the only place I come away from, with tunes scribbled all over flyers … leading to hours of intensive searching …. some tracks proving either more elusive than others or just out of my price range.

b it really is a friendly welcoming atmosphere

c there’s usually a little record stall set up every month, so I get to buy more of those big black round things.

d the music is superb’ although not for the faint hearted i.e. not many concessions to the new jazz sounds. It’s as described on the flyer…100mph and it is!

e this once a month get together of like minded folk is perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon/evening.

of typical ‘out to lunch’ tunes … so here it is …. a section from my first guest spot at Dogma

(a previous venue) and it’s recorded in the order that I played it, I’ve also included the artwork for the CD … hope you enjoy it.

Yesterday I had the distinct pleasure of listening to an excellent 3 hr radio programme on the interwebthingymebob called Soul Discovery on 209radio from Cambridge hosted by Mike O`Donnell. His guests where Dr Bob Jones, Snowboy and Colin Curtis (pictured above with jazz/soul DJ Mark Grice(left), at the King Georges` Blackburn) and they where there to talk about the UK Jazz Dance Scene. I got the heads up on this from Colin himself who I met the night before at a great venue in St Annes (just outside of Blackpool - more on that in another post). Colin and his friend/driver Mark travel half way across the country to be part of this. For me it was like a moth to a flame. Having tuned in and absorbed it, all I can say it is a gem of a programme featuring some of the movers and shakers of the music we love. Their knowledge of the music, both at that time. and now, is amazing. They discuss how it all came about both in the North and the South of the UK, the dancers.... record sourcing and the clubs of the day and they add life and texture to Snowboys book - `From Jazz Funk & Fusion to Acid Jazz` (available from www.aurthorhouse.co.uk). I am a proud owner of this book`s original issue (spelling mistakes and all, which for me makes it more real cus I can`t spell for toffee as we say in the UK).........honest just buy it !

Freestyle records have a bit of a treat for all you fans of the UK Jazzfunk era with this album release from The Baker Brothers - (Dan & Rich Baker and Chris Pedley). Some of us are old enough to have had the pleasure of hearing these tracks the first time around at venues up and down the UK. and this album has some iconic tunes to really hit the spot for people traditionally into this music or fans of the more recent retro soul/funk genre. Take some classic soul & funk dance tunes from that period, let the lads do their stuff from scratch and add some great vocalists and there you have "Avid Sounds". Vanessa Freeman vocal of the classic `Family Tree`is the stand out track for me however being a huge Gil Scot Heron fan, the `Lady Jane & John Coltrane` also shines. These tunes have been treated with all due respect and recreated with The Baker Brothers own style. Their version of the Backbyrds `Rock Creek Park` and the funk groove of `Shack Up` also contribute to the overall Jazzfunk theme.Well worth checking out.

I heard the samples of this album on Juno and couldn`t wait to get my mitts on it. A small combo of four players with a full heavy Latin beat sound. Cesar Granados is the Percussionist (Congas), that pulls it all together and joining him is Halo Von Hadeln on drums, Jerker Kluge on bass & Jo Junghanss on piano. They have chosen some classic Latin tunes to interpetate from artists as Mongo Santamaria , Marcos Valle, Kenny Dorham etc. Dorham`s `Afrodisia` has always been a fave of mine, hence the name Fro-Disia, and this is an good version with some great congas. Other highligts are `Manteca` (which I first heard done by Dizzy Gillespie), and probably the most easily recognised tune being their version of Valle`s `Batucada Surgiu`, more commonly assocoated as the Sergio Mendes track `Batucada`. No singing on any of these tracks so you have been warned. In the rightplace these tracks could go down well with a more traditional Dance Jazz crowd. Worth the pennies.

The Five Corners Quintet in Manchester

Manchesters Band On The Wall has recently been re-opened after a full refurbishment. It has long been a venue with a history of showcasing great jazz/soul/funk and world music artists and I chuffed to bits it has once again put itself back on the map. Artist selection for our genre of music is overseen by none other than JazzFM`s Mike Chadwick. Along with other artists he has played a blinder for the North West UK and booked one of Europe`s premier jazz groups and giants of dance floor jazz - The Five Corners Quintet from Helsinki. They will be appearing on Wednesday October 14th at an incredable ticket price of £12.50. Big up to Mike for this. These guys are not to be missed. The quality of the individuals in the group are exceptional. Teppo Mäkynen (drums/bandleader), Timo Lassy (sax), Jukka Eskola (trumpet), Mikael Jakobsson (piano), and Antti Lötjönen (double bass). Lassy & Esckola are individual artists in their own right. This is an amazing oportunity to see this group. My tickets booked.

Colin Curtis Classic Dance jazz mix

this mix was put together for 2 reasons, to celebrate the launch of mark cotgrove’s (snowboy to you and me) new book on the uk underground jazz dance scene between the 70’s and early 90’s’ - ‘from jazz funk & fusion to acid jazz’ in the book he pays tribute to artists, dj’s and dancers. heavily featured is the influential dj, colin curtis. since he started dj’n in the 60’s colin has stepped easily between northern soul, modern soul, jazz, jazz funk and soulful house. his knowledge on music is awesome to say the least. i have the pleasure to call him my friend. the second reason therefore is to provide a sample of the jazz he was playing at the time and you may then understand what a great time we had attending venues such as blackpool mecca, the ritz all dayers (manchester), rafters (manchester), and the berlin (manchester), plus others. he still djs up and down the country at soul venues and including with us at any fro-disia session. we hope you enjoy it. all comments will be passed on to colin - teecee

The Five Corners Quintet feature twice on this mix. Their great track `blueprint` and from their very own Timo Lassy `the more I look at you` featuring the vocals of Jose James. Some quite heavy dance floor funk tracks in the middle to add to the mix of styles. The fave track for me being Flat Three `sesso brillante` the Mooon remix (not a spelling mistake). Great in the bands original version but this is an excellent remix. First heard on a difficult to get Japanese compilation album Jazz Floor Japanese Club Jazz For Real People, but now available on a 12".
